A classic Impressionist view of London, Claude Monet's 'Houses of Parliament, Effect of Fog' captures the atmosphere of the city with loose brushstrokes and a focus on light and colour.
Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a founder of French Impressionism, the art movement that shifted painting from literal representation toward subjective perception and the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. Monet is perhaps best known for his series of paintings depicting water lilies at his home in Giverny. However, he also produced many cityscapes, seascapes, and landscapes. Between 1900 and 1905, Monet repeatedly painted the Palace of Westminster from the vantage point of St. Thomas' Hospital across the River Thames. He created nearly 100 canvases of the building under different conditions of light and weather. In this painting, the Houses of Parliament appear as a dark silhouette against a sky of yellow and gold. The Thames reflects the light, creating a shimmering effect. The scene is softened by a layer of fog, which was a common atmospheric condition in London at the time. Monet's loose brushstrokes and focus on light and colour capture the ephemeral quality of the scene.
