A refined woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro depicting two women during the morning hours in the Yoshiwara district.
Kitagawa Utamaro created this woodblock print as part of his series Twelve Hours in Yoshiwara. The series documents the daily life of courtesans within the pleasure district of Edo. This specific image represents the Hour of the Dragon, which corresponds to the period between 7:00 and 9:00 in the morning.
Utamaro focuses on the private, domestic moments of his subjects. Two women are depicted in a state of morning relaxation. One woman sits upright, adjusting her hair, while the other reclines on a futon. The composition uses the characteristic elongated proportions that define Utamaro's mature style. The artist employs a subtle colour palette, relying on soft pinks, muted greens, and ochre tones to define the textiles and the interior space.
Technical mastery is evident in the treatment of the fabric patterns. The outer robe features a bold, circular motif, while the inner garments display more delicate, linear designs. A folding screen stands to the left, providing a geometric contrast to the organic curves of the figures. The cartouche in the upper right corner identifies the series and the specific hour, framed by a floral motif. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to capture intimacy and quietude within the highly structured environment of the Yoshiwara district. The work remains a primary example of the bijin-ga genre, which prioritises the depiction of beautiful women through refined line work and balanced composition.
