A classic ink painting of the jovial Zen figure Hotei by the Muromachi period monk-painter Kenkō Shōkei.
This ink painting depicts Hotei, the eccentric Zen figure often associated with contentment and abundance. Kenkō Shōkei, a monk-painter active during the Muromachi period, employs the suiboku-ga technique to capture the subject. The artist uses varying densities of ink to define the figure, from the bold, dark strokes of the robes to the lighter, wash-like application on the skin. Hotei is shown with his characteristic large belly and jovial expression, carrying his sack over his shoulder. The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the figure against an empty background, which is a hallmark of Zen-influenced art.
Kenkō Shōkei was a student of the painter Geiami and spent time at Kenchō-ji in Kamakura. His work reflects the influence of Chinese Song and Yuan dynasty painting, which was highly regarded in Japanese monastic circles at the time. The brushwork is economical, demonstrating a mastery of control where every mark serves a purpose in conveying the weight and posture of the figure. The painting is mounted as a hanging scroll, a format that dictates the vertical orientation and the contemplative nature of the viewing experience. The figure of Hotei appears in many works from this period, often serving as a reminder of the joy found in simplicity and the rejection of worldly attachments. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts of the original ink, preserving the texture of the paper and the fluidity of the artist's hand.
