Jonan Etetsu, a monk-painter active during the Muromachi period, employs a style characteristic of the period's ink traditions. The figure of Hotei is rendered with economical, fluid brushwork, capturing his characteristic corpulence and jovial expression. He carries his signature cloth sack, which contains his few worldly possessions, and holds a string of prayer beads.
