A complex, multi-layered composition by Russian avant-garde artist Pavel Filonov, showcasing his unique Analytical Art style through fragmented forms and intense colour.
Pavel Filonov, a central figure in the Russian avant-garde, developed a unique methodology he termed Analytical Art. This approach prioritised the organic growth of a composition, where the artist builds the image from small, cellular units rather than sketching a pre-determined outline. In Horsemen, this philosophy is evident in the dense, fragmented surface where figures and horses merge into a singular, crystalline structure. The canvas is crowded with overlapping forms, creating a sense of constant motion and transformation. Filonov rejected the traditional perspective, opting instead for a multi-dimensional view that captures the internal energy of his subjects. The palette is dominated by warm yellows, ochres, and sharp reds, which contrast with the darker, more defined silhouettes of the riders. Each section of the painting appears to be in a state of flux, reflecting the artist's belief that a work of art should function like a living organism, growing from the centre outwards. Filonov often spent months on a single canvas, applying paint with a meticulous, almost scientific precision. His work sits outside the typical classifications of Cubism or Futurism, as it focuses on the spiritual and biological essence of the subject matter rather than purely formal experimentation. The figures in this piece are not merely depicted, they are constructed through a complex web of lines and colour fields. This print captures the intensity of Filonov's technique, preserving the granular detail of his brushwork and the chaotic, yet controlled, rhythm of his composition. It is a representative example of his mature style, which sought to reveal the hidden forces beneath the surface of reality.
