A detailed nineteenth-century engraving depicting the Parisian storefront of C. Detouche, featuring interior vignettes and elaborate decorative framing.
This engraving by Isaac Weissenbruch depicts the Parisian storefront of C. Detouche, a renowned clockmaker and jeweller of the nineteenth century. The composition functions as a visual advertisement, presenting the shop as a 'Maison de Confiance' or house of trust. The central panel provides a detailed view of the multi-storey shop front, showcasing rows of clocks and jewellery displayed behind large glass windows. Pedestrians are visible on the pavement, adding a sense of scale and activity to the urban scene.
The main image is framed by four smaller circular and rectangular vignettes. These secondary scenes offer glimpses into the interior of the shop, revealing the layout of the counters, the arrangement of goods, and the interactions between staff and customers. The decorative border is elaborate, featuring winged figures holding a central emblem, which incorporates classical motifs and symbols of commerce. The use of fine lines and cross-hatching is characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century commercial engraving, designed to convey the precision and quality of the goods sold within the establishment.
Weissenbruch, a Dutch artist, captures the architectural ambition of the Parisian retail space during this period. The work serves as a record of mid-century shop design, where the facade acted as a primary tool for attracting clientele. The inclusion of the 'Prix-Fixe' signage indicates a shift towards modern retail practices, where prices were set rather than negotiated. This print provides a clear view of the intersection between art, commerce, and urban development in nineteenth-century Paris, documenting the presentation of luxury goods to the public.
