A minimalist, hard-edge abstract painting by Maud Morgan, featuring a muted sage green field punctuated by sharp black and red geometric forms.
Maud Morgan, a significant figure in the American modernist tradition, created this work as a response to the social and political climate of the late 1960s. The composition reflects her move away from the gestural brushwork of earlier decades toward a more controlled, hard-edge aesthetic. By employing large, flat planes of muted sage green, Morgan creates a sense of stillness that contrasts with the sharp, geometric interventions.
The central black wedge, pointing downwards, acts as a visual anchor, dividing the space with precision. To the left, a vertical column features horizontal bands of red, which reappear as a solid base at the bottom of the canvas. These red elements provide a stark chromatic counterpoint to the dominant grey-green field. The work avoids literal representation, opting instead for a symbolic language of form and colour to convey its subject matter. The balance between the expansive negative space and the rigid geometric shapes suggests a tension between order and disruption.
Morgan studied in Paris under Hans Hofmann, an experience that informed her approach to spatial relationships and colour theory. Her practice often involved the use of paper collages as preparatory studies, which explains the clean, defined edges found in her paintings. This piece demonstrates her ability to distil complex emotional responses into a minimalist visual vocabulary. The deliberate placement of each element encourages the viewer to consider the relationship between the individual components and the whole. As a mid-career work, it captures the shift in her style towards a more disciplined, architectural approach to abstraction, where the interaction of colour and geometry carries the weight of the composition.
