A circular Renaissance painting by Luca Signorelli, depicting the Holy Family with Saint Catherine in a moment of quiet contemplation.
This tondo, or circular painting, by the Italian Renaissance master Luca Signorelli, depicts the Holy Family accompanied by Saint Catherine. The composition is typical of the period, utilising the circular frame to organise the figures in a balanced, harmonious arrangement. The Virgin Mary sits centrally, her gaze directed towards the Christ Child, who is positioned on her lap. To the left, Saint Catherine is shown in profile, her attention fixed upon an open book, suggesting a moment of quiet study or contemplation. Behind them, Saint Joseph completes the group, his expression grave and protective.
Signorelli, a painter from Cortona, is known for his focus on the human form and his ability to convey weight and volume through light and shadow. In this work, the figures possess a sculptural quality, their forms clearly defined against the background. The colour palette is restrained, relying on deep reds, dark blues, and earthy tones to ground the scene. The drapery is rendered with precision, showing the artist's attention to the fall of fabric and the underlying anatomy of the subjects. The inclusion of the book and the specific gestures of the hands add a narrative layer to the devotional image, inviting the viewer to observe the interaction between the figures.
The work is housed within an ornate, carved wooden frame, which is original to the piece and features decorative motifs that complement the circular format of the painting. This type of domestic devotional art was common in the homes of wealthy patrons during the early sixteenth century. It reflects the period's interest in combining religious themes with humanistic elements, such as the act of reading. The painting remains a clear example of Signorelli's mature style, demonstrating his technical control and his approach to traditional Christian iconography.
