A classic Venetian Renaissance oil painting depicting the Holy Family alongside Saint Christina of Bolsena, rendered with soft lighting and balanced composition.
Polidoro da Lanciano, a painter active in Venice during the mid-sixteenth century, produced this work in the tradition of the Venetian school. The composition features the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child, accompanied by Saint Joseph and Saint Christina of Bolsena. The figures are arranged in a manner typical of the period, with a focus on soft modelling and the gentle interaction between the subjects.
The artist draws upon the stylistic influence of Titian and Bonifazio de' Pitati, particularly in the treatment of the drapery and the atmospheric quality of the background. Saint Christina is identified by her traditional attribute, the millstone, which rests near her hand. The Christ Child is depicted with a naturalistic posture, leaning against the Virgin, while Joseph observes the scene from the right. The background opens to a distant, hilly vista, a common device in Venetian art to provide spatial depth and a sense of calm.
The painting demonstrates the artist's ability to balance religious narrative with human warmth. The lighting is soft, creating a sense of intimacy within the group. The textures of the fabrics, from the heavy folds of the robes to the delicate details of the hair, are rendered with technical precision. This work reflects the broader interest in devotional imagery that was common among private collectors in sixteenth-century Venice. The composition is stable and balanced, directing the viewer's attention to the central figures of the mother and child, while the secondary figures provide a sense of narrative completeness. The work remains a representative example of the mid-century Venetian style, prioritising harmony and clarity in its depiction of sacred subjects.
