A serene Baroque depiction of the Holy Family resting during their flight to Egypt, painted by the Italian master Simone Cantarini.
Simone Cantarini, a pupil of Guido Reni, produced this work during the mid-seventeenth century. The composition depicts the Holy Family during their journey to Egypt, a subject frequently explored by artists of the Bolognese school. The Virgin Mary sits in the foreground, cradling the infant Christ, while Saint Joseph rests in the background, his posture suggesting the fatigue of their travels.
Cantarini employs a balanced arrangement, placing the figures within a quiet, rural setting. The use of light and shadow, characteristic of the Baroque period, directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between mother and child. The palette consists of muted earth tones, punctuated by the deep blue of the Virgin's mantle and the soft pink of her garment. The background features a distant, rolling terrain under a darkening sky, which adds a sense of atmosphere to the scene.
Technically, the painting demonstrates Cantarini's ability to render human form with grace and naturalism. His brushwork is controlled, allowing for smooth transitions in the skin tones and the folds of the fabric. The composition avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the quiet intimacy of the moment. This work reflects the influence of his mentor, Reni, particularly in the idealised features of the figures and the clarity of the narrative. It remains a representative example of the religious art produced in Italy during this period, where artists sought to combine classical restraint with the emotional depth of the Baroque style. The print captures these subtle tonal shifts and the delicate interplay of light across the figures, providing a clear reproduction of the original canvas.
