Holme Fen pairs a quiet drainage channel with reed-fringed flats and a sturdy sluice, bringing the vast, water-shaped character of the Fens into a calm, luminous scene.
Straight water glints between ochre reeds and low green banks, leading towards a level horizon under tall summer clouds. In the foreground, the timber-and-metal sluice gives the wetland a practical human detail, with its gates and posts set firmly in the slow water. The broad sky and even land make the small structures feel especially precise.
