Holme Fen draws the eye along still water towards a distant windmill, with reed beds, lily pads and immense summer clouds giving the Cambridgeshire flatlands their spacious calm.

Tall tawny reeds rise close to the lower edge, their seed heads leaning across a blue channel broken by floating green leaves. On the far bank, a dark windmill and its pale sails stand against low tree lines and open fields. Above them, stacked cream clouds fill most of the sky, their light reflected in soft, irregular shapes across the water.

Holme Fen evokes the unhurried reach of the Fens, where drainage water, grasses and big weather define the route through the land. Anyone familiar with Cambridgeshire’s level horizons will recognise the way the channel leads outward, holding a small landmark at its end and sky on every side.
