Description
A 1937 work by Georgia O'Keeffe, featuring a large pink hollyhock blossom suspended above the iconic New Mexican mountain, Cerro Pedernal.
Georgia O'Keeffe painted Hollyhock Pink with Pedernal in 1937, a period during which she spent significant time in New Mexico. The work combines two of her most frequent subjects: the magnified floral form and the geological presence of Cerro Pedernal. By placing the oversized hollyhock blossom in the sky above the mountain, O'Keeffe disrupts traditional scale and perspective. The flower, rendered with soft, radiating petals in shades of pink and white, occupies the upper right quadrant. Its central stamen provides a sharp, yellow-green contrast to the surrounding petals. Below, the flat-topped mountain of Pedernal is depicted in deep blues and greens, echoing the colours of the sky and the surrounding terrain.
O'Keeffe often utilised the landscape of the American Southwest as a source for her compositions. Her approach to these subjects is characterised by clean lines and smooth transitions of colour. She avoids excessive detail, preferring to focus on the essential shapes and the relationship between the organic form of the flower and the permanence of the mountain. The sky is a gradient of blue, providing a clear backdrop that allows both elements to exist in a surreal, dreamlike space. This juxtaposition of the ephemeral bloom and the ancient rock formation is a hallmark of her work from this decade. The painting demonstrates her ability to synthesise disparate elements into a unified, balanced composition. The smooth application of paint and the deliberate choice of a high-chroma palette create a sense of clarity and stillness. This print captures the precise colour relationships and the distinct, simplified forms that define O'Keeffe's mature style.
