A 1905 oil painting by Frederic Remington depicting Indigenous historians recording tribal narratives on animal hides within a dimly lit lodge.
Frederic Remington, a painter and sculptor known for his documentation of the American West, produced Historians of the Tribe in 1905. The composition depicts a group of Indigenous men gathered inside a lodge, illuminated by a central fire. The figures are engaged in the act of recording tribal history upon large, stretched animal hides. One man gestures toward the pictographic symbols, while others observe or participate in the process.
Remington employs a muted, earthy palette to convey the dim, smoke-filled interior. The light source, emanating from the small fire at the base of the frame, creates strong contrasts and deep shadows that define the musculature of the figures and the texture of the hides. The artist focuses on the narrative of cultural preservation, capturing a moment of oral and visual tradition.
This work reflects Remington's later career, during which he moved away from the action-oriented scenes of his earlier illustrations toward more atmospheric and painterly compositions. His brushwork is looser here than in his early commercial work, allowing for a focus on the interplay of light and shadow within the confined space of the lodge. The painting provides a view into the artist's interpretation of Plains Indian life, prioritising the quiet, intellectual activity of the historians over the conflict often associated with his earlier depictions of the frontier. The composition is balanced, with the central fire acting as a vertical axis that anchors the figures surrounding it. The walls of the lodge, covered in historical records, frame the scene and provide context for the activity taking place within.
