This woodblock print is part of the celebrated series, Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, published by Hoeido. Utagawa Hiroshige captures the eighth station, Hiratsuka, with his characteristic attention to atmospheric conditions and human activity. The composition features a narrow, winding path known as the Nawate Road, which cuts through the rural terrain. Two travellers are depicted in the foreground, their forms rendered with simple, expressive lines as they navigate the route with their heavy burdens.

In the background, the conical shape of Mount Koma dominates the view, while the distant, snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji emerges faintly against the horizon. Hiroshige employs a balanced colour palette, using soft blues for the water and sky, contrasted by the muted earth tones of the path and the dark, textured silhouettes of the pine trees. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to combine precise observation of the Japanese countryside with a sense of narrative movement. The inclusion of traditional signposts and the figures of other distant travellers adds a sense of scale and realism to the scene.
