Description
A classic Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting a jay perched among hibiscus flowers in the traditional kacho-ga style.
Utagawa Hiroshige produced this woodblock print as part of his extensive work in the kacho-ga (bird and flower) genre. The composition features a jay perched on a branch of Hibiscus mutabilis, commonly known as the Confederate rose. This plant is known for its flowers that change colour from white to pink as they age. Hiroshige captures the bird in a moment of stillness, its head turned back to look over its shoulder.
The print employs the bokashi technique, a method of hand-applying ink to the woodblock to create a graded colour effect. A dark reddish-brown band at the top of the frame fades into the natural tone of the paper, suggesting a sky at dawn or dusk. The leaves are rendered in a deep teal, likely using Prussian blue, which was a popular pigment in nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking. The bird's plumage is detailed with fine lines to indicate the texture of feathers, while the hibiscus petals are defined by soft, curving outlines.
Hiroshige was a master of the ukiyo-e tradition, and his bird and flower prints were highly sought after for their technical precision. This specific work demonstrates his ability to balance negative space with detailed subjects. The placement of the bird and the diagonal sweep of the hibiscus branch create a stable yet dynamic arrangement. The artist's signature and seal are visible on the right side, marking the authenticity of the original production.
