A Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting a jay on a flowering hibiscus branch. This kacho-ga work uses the bokashi technique for a soft colour gradient.
Utagawa Hiroshige produced this woodblock print as part of his work in the kacho-ga genre. The composition features a jay perched on a slender branch of Hibiscus mutabilis. This plant is often called the Confederate rose. It is known for flowers that change from white to pink during the day. The artist uses the bokashi technique to create the reddish gradient at the top of the frame. This graded printing adds depth to the background. The bird is rendered with precise lines to define its feathers and crest. Its yellow and grey plumage contrasts with the dark green leaves of the hibiscus. Hiroshige was a master of the ukiyo-e tradition during the Edo period. While he is often associated with topographical series, his bird and flower studies demonstrate a different technical focus. These works rely on the balance between negative space and detailed natural subjects. The placement of the bird and the diagonal orientation of the branches create a sense of movement. This print is a nishiki-e, or multi-coloured woodblock print. Each colour required a separate carved block. The subtle tones in the flower petals show the skill of the printers who worked with Hiroshige. The signature and artist seal are visible on the right side of the composition.
