A satirical 1895 etching by Marius Bauer depicting a chaotic, infernal scene at an exhibition, rendered with expressive, energetic lines.
Marius Bauer, a Dutch artist known for his Orientalist scenes and etchings, produced this satirical work in 1895. The title, translated as 'The Last Fireworks at the Exhibition (First Prize)', refers to a specific cultural moment in the Netherlands. The image depicts a chaotic, infernal scene where a figure in formal attire is being carried away by demonic entities. Above them, a central figure presides over the chaos, while below, an elephant and various figures populate a landscape filled with smoke and fire. The text 'VAAR-WEL' and 'FARCEUR VA' are visible, adding to the narrative of departure and mockery.
Bauer employs a loose, expressive etching technique. The lines are thin and energetic, capturing the frenetic movement of the figures and the atmospheric haze of the fireworks. The composition is divided into distinct zones: the celestial, where the demonic court resides; the mid-air, where the abduction occurs; and the terrestrial, where the exhibition grounds are depicted. The density of the work is high, with every corner filled with detail, from the architectural structures to the small figures scurrying below. This piece demonstrates Bauer's ability to blend fantasy with social commentary, moving away from his usual focus on Eastern architecture and street life to engage with contemporary Dutch events.
The etching reflects the darker, more imaginative side of Symbolism, where the boundaries between reality and the grotesque are blurred. The use of light and shadow is particularly effective, creating a sense of depth despite the crowded nature of the scene. It remains a curious example of how artists of the period used printmaking to comment on public spectacles and the vanity of human achievement. The work is a fine example of late nineteenth-century graphic art, showcasing the technical skill and wit of a Dutch master.
