A detailed depiction of labourers and horses clearing ice from the Karnemelksloot near Naarden during the harsh winter of 1814.
Pieter Gerardus van Os, a Dutch painter known for his animal studies and winter scenes, captures a specific historical event in this work. The painting depicts the clearing of ice from the Karnemelksloot, a waterway near Naarden, during the severe winter of 1814. The scene shows a group of labourers and horses working to break through the frozen surface to allow passage for a barge.
The composition is dominated by the expansive, overcast sky, which occupies the upper two-thirds of the canvas. Van Os employs a muted palette of greys, browns, and whites to convey the biting cold of a Dutch winter. The figures are distributed across the foreground, engaged in the physical exertion required to clear the channel. Their posture and the presence of tools indicate the difficulty of the task. To the left, a barge is partially visible, its dark hull contrasting with the pale, icy surroundings.
Van Os demonstrates a keen eye for detail, particularly in the rendering of the horses and the textures of the ice. The work reflects the tradition of Dutch winter scenes, yet it is grounded in a specific, documented moment of local history. The distant silhouette of a church tower provides a sense of place, anchoring the scene within the Dutch countryside. The painting avoids dramatic artifice, focusing instead on the reality of daily life and the struggle against the elements. Through careful observation, the artist documents the collaborative effort required to maintain vital transport routes during periods of extreme weather. The work remains a record of both the environmental conditions of the early nineteenth century and the resilience of the local population.
