Hendrik Voogd, a Dutch artist who spent the majority of his career in Rome, produced this detailed study of the Colosseum. The work captures the structure during a period when the site remained a primary destination for artists on the Grand Tour. Voogd employs a precise pen technique combined with subtle wash to define the weathered stone surfaces and the encroaching vegetation that characterised the ruins at the turn of the nineteenth century.

The composition focuses on the exterior facade, where the rhythmic repetition of the arches provides a sense of scale.
