A detailed drypoint engraving by the Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet, depicting a stag hunt with hunters and hounds in a rural setting.
The Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet, also known as the Master of the Housebook, remains one of the most significant figures in late fifteenth-century German printmaking. This drypoint, titled Hertenjacht, captures a scene of aristocratic leisure set against a rural backdrop. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the dense, vertical lines of the forest on the left, where the stag is pursued, and the open, horizontal expanse of the field on the right, where the hunters prepare for the kill.
The artist employs a drypoint technique, which allows for a softer, more atmospheric quality than traditional copperplate engraving. The burr created by the needle produces velvety, dark lines that define the figures of the hounds and the hunters. The hunters are depicted with a sense of movement, one blowing a horn while another gestures towards the prey. The inclusion of small, specific details, such as the birds in the sky and the rocky terrain, provides a sense of place and narrative depth. The figures are dressed in the fashion of the period, with the hunters wearing pointed hats and tunics that reflect the social status associated with the hunt.
This work is characteristic of the Master's style, which often combined observational accuracy with a certain narrative charm. The figures are rendered with a focus on gesture and posture, conveying the excitement of the chase. The background features a distant church spire and a small wayside cross, elements that anchor the scene in a recognisable European landscape. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the artist in managing light and shadow through hatching and cross-hatching, creating a sense of volume in the figures and depth in the surrounding environment. It remains a primary example of the technical experimentation occurring in German printmaking during the late Gothic period.
