A serene pastoral scene featuring cattle and sheep at a stream, rendered in delicate pen and ink with grey wash by the Dutch artist Jacob Cats.
This work by the Dutch artist Jacob Cats captures a quiet, pastoral scene typical of the late eighteenth-century interest in rural life. The composition focuses on a group of cattle and sheep wading into a shallow stream to drink, while their keepers take a moment of respite nearby. Cats employs a delicate technique, using pen and brown ink to define the forms of the animals and the surrounding foliage, while grey wash provides depth and shadow to the water and the distant hills.
The scene is constructed with a clear sense of spatial progression. In the foreground, the animals are rendered with anatomical precision, their reflections visible in the calm water. The middle ground features a small cluster of buildings, suggesting a modest farmstead, which leads the eye toward the rolling hills in the distance. The trees on the right side of the frame act as a natural repoussoir, framing the view and drawing the viewer into the depth of the scene.
Jacob Cats was known for his ability to evoke a sense of calm through his draughtsmanship. His work often reflects the influence of earlier Dutch masters who specialised in rural subjects, yet he maintains a distinct clarity in his line work. The absence of heavy colour allows the viewer to focus on the texture of the ink and the subtle gradations of the wash. This piece is an example of the refined graphic style that defined the period, where the observation of nature and daily agricultural tasks were elevated through careful composition and technical skill. The print captures the stillness of a summer day, offering a glimpse into a traditional way of life that remained a popular subject for collectors and artists alike during the late Enlightenment era.
