A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Johannes Visscher depicting a pastoral scene with a herdsman, a young woman, and their livestock.
This etching by Johannes Visscher captures a quiet moment of pastoral life, a common subject within the Dutch Golden Age. The composition features a herdsman and a young woman interacting near a rocky outcrop, surrounded by a small flock of goats and a donkey. Visscher, a skilled printmaker, demonstrates his ability to render texture through varied line work, from the rough surface of the stone to the soft coats of the animals.
The scene is based on a design by Nicolaes Berchem, whose influence is evident in the arrangement of the figures and the naturalistic depiction of the animals. The herdsman sits atop the ledge, his posture relaxed, while the woman stands beside him. A dog stands alert on the rock, adding a sense of movement to the otherwise still scene. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the focus to stay on the interaction between the figures and their livestock.
Technically, the work displays the precision characteristic of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking. Visscher uses cross-hatching and fine lines to create depth and shadow, particularly in the foreground where the animals rest. The inclusion of the publisher's details at the bottom, Justus Danckerts, provides context regarding the commercial circulation of such prints during the period. This piece offers a glimpse into the artistic interests of the time, which often celebrated the simplicity of rural existence. The print is a fine example of the collaborative nature of print production in Amsterdam, where artists and publishers worked together to distribute imagery to a growing market of collectors.
