A study in ink and wash by Hendrick ten Oever, depicting a herdsman resting with his cattle and sheep in a rural setting.
This work by Hendrick ten Oever captures a quiet moment in the Dutch countryside. The composition centres on a herdsman resting beneath the shade of a large tree, accompanied by his livestock. The artist employs ink and wash to define the forms of the cattle and sheep, using varying tones of grey to suggest volume and light. The technique relies on clear outlines combined with fluid washes, a common approach for drawings of this period intended for study or private collection.
Ten Oever, active in Zwolle, produced many works focusing on rural life and animal studies. His approach to the subject matter reflects the broader interest in pastoral themes prevalent among Dutch artists of the seventeenth century. The drawing demonstrates his ability to organise a scene with multiple figures while maintaining a sense of calm. The presence of the herdsman provides a human element to the rural setting, grounding the animals within a narrative context. The visible brushwork in the wash areas reveals the artist's process, showing how he built up the shadows to create depth across the paper surface. This piece remains a representative example of the draughtsmanship associated with the Dutch Golden Age, where the observation of everyday life was a primary concern for many practitioners. The work is currently held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, which provides a clear provenance for this specific study.
