A detailed neoclassical commemorative engraving by Pierre Philippe Choffard, honouring the life and career of the French print dealer Pierre-François Basan.
This commemorative print by Pierre Philippe Choffard serves as a tribute to the noted French engraver and art dealer Pierre-François Basan. Produced in the late eighteenth century, the work reflects the conventions of neoclassical allegory, blending classical mythology with the professional reality of the print trade.
In the upper portion of the composition, the god Mercury descends upon a cloud, holding his caduceus. He represents commerce and the exchange of artistic goods, themes central to Basan's career as a publisher and merchant of fine prints. Below, a seated figure, likely representing Basan himself, gestures towards an easel and various portfolios. A younger assistant or apprentice stands to the right, actively handling a large portfolio labelled with the term 'Estampes Modernes'. The scene is filled with the tools of the trade: books, stacks of prints, and artistic equipment.
Choffard, a master of the rococo and neoclassical vignette, employs precise, fine-lined engraving techniques to define the textures of the clothing, the atmospheric clouds, and the architectural interior. The inclusion of specific titles on the books and portfolios provides a documentary quality to the work, grounding the mythological elements in the tangible history of the Parisian art market. The inscription at the base, 'A LA MÉMOIRE DE P. FR. BASAN', confirms the commemorative intent of the piece, which was executed in the seventh year of the French Republican calendar. The print captures the intersection of artistic production and commercial distribution, offering a glimpse into the professional life of an influential figure in the history of European printmaking.
