A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Adamo Scultori, depicting the muscular form of Hercules from behind with his club and lion skin.
This engraving by Adamo Scultori presents a muscular study of the mythological figure Hercules. The composition focuses on the anatomy of the hero, viewed from behind, as he carries his characteristic club across his shoulders. The lion skin, a traditional attribute of Hercules, hangs from his right arm, providing a textural contrast to the smooth, defined musculature of the figure. Scultori, a member of a family of engravers based in Mantua, demonstrates a technical command of the burin through his use of cross-hatching and parallel lines to model the form.
The work reflects the Mannerist interest in the human figure, particularly the exaggerated muscularity often associated with the influence of Michelangelo. The background is rendered with horizontal hatching, which creates a neutral space that directs the viewer's attention to the sculptural quality of the subject. The lines are precise, following the contours of the back, glutes, and legs to suggest volume and weight. This print is typical of the period, where reproductive engravings were used to disseminate the styles of major painters and sculptors to a wider audience.
Adamo Scultori was active in the mid-to-late sixteenth century and is known for his reproductions of works by Giulio Romano and other masters. This specific print captures the anatomical rigour that defined the period's approach to classical subjects. The clarity of the line work allows for a detailed examination of the musculature, making it a representative example of Italian Renaissance printmaking. The composition is balanced, with the weight of the club and the drape of the lion skin creating a sense of stability despite the dynamic tension in the figure's pose.
