An engraving by Pieter de Grebber depicting Mary Magdalene as a penitent sinner. The image features fine lines and a simple composition, capturing a moment of remorse and reflection.
This engraving by Pieter de Grebber (1600-1652) depicts Mary Magdalene as a penitent sinner. De Grebber was a Dutch Golden Age painter known for his history paintings and portraits. He worked in Haarlem and was influenced by Peter Paul Rubens and the French Classicist style. His oeuvre includes many religious scenes, often commissioned for Catholic churches and institutions. The image shows Mary Magdalene in a state of remorse, her hands clasped to her chest and tears streaming down her face. The composition is simple, with the figure set against a dark, undefined background. A skull and open book are at the lower left, symbols of mortality and repentance. The fine lines of the engraving create a sense of depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the drapery and hair. The Latin inscription at the bottom identifies the subject and speaks to the transformative power of tears and repentance.
