A fine etching by David Deuchar, capturing a portrait study inspired by the style of Rembrandt van Rijn.
This etching by the Scottish artist David Deuchar presents a study of a male figure, modelled after the self-portraits of the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn. Deuchar, a naval surgeon and amateur printmaker, produced a collection of etchings inspired by the Dutch school during the late eighteenth century. His work reflects a period of intense interest in the techniques of seventeenth-century masters, particularly their use of line and shadow to define form.
The composition focuses on the subject in profile, wearing a soft cap and sporting curly hair. Deuchar employs a series of short, hatched lines to build the contours of the face and the texture of the clothing. The shading is concentrated on the right side of the face, creating a sense of volume and depth. The artist includes a signature mark in the lower left corner, mimicking the shorthand often found on original Rembrandt plates. This piece demonstrates the technical approach of an artist working in the tradition of the Dutch Golden Age, while operating within the context of the British print market of the 1780s.
Deuchar's etchings were widely collected by his contemporaries, who valued his ability to capture the spirit of earlier European works. The print is executed with a clear, deliberate line quality, prioritising the structural integrity of the portrait over decorative flourishes. It serves as a record of how eighteenth-century artists engaged with the history of printmaking, translating the tonal qualities of oil painting into the stark, monochromatic language of the etching needle. The work remains a fine example of the period's fascination with historical styles and the craft of the copperplate.
