A detailed 17th-century etching by Jan Lievens, capturing a man in a fur cap with expressive line work and dramatic shadow.
This etching by Jan Lievens captures a man in profile, wearing a textured fur cap. Lievens, a contemporary of Rembrandt in Leiden, shared a studio with him during the late 1620s. Both artists explored the genre of the tronie, a study of a character or expression rather than a formal portrait of a specific individual. This work demonstrates the technical skill Lievens applied to the copper plate, using varied line weights to define the coarse texture of the fur and the weathered features of the subject.
The composition focuses on the head and shoulders, with the man looking towards the right. The artist employs dense cross-hatching to create deep shadows, particularly around the eyes and beneath the cap. These shadows provide a sense of volume and weight to the figure. The lines are energetic, showing the spontaneity often found in Dutch Golden Age printmaking. The background remains largely unworked, which directs the viewer's attention to the psychological presence of the sitter.
Lievens was highly regarded during his lifetime for his ability to render light and shadow. His prints often served as exercises in dramatic lighting, a technique he and Rembrandt refined together. This specific etching reflects the interest in exotic or historical costume common in the period, as the fur cap adds a sense of character to the anonymous man. The print remains a clear example of the experimental nature of 17th-century Dutch etching, where artists pushed the boundaries of the medium to achieve painterly effects. It is a study of human form, rendered with precision and a keen eye for the textures of fabric and skin.
