A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Nicolaes Berchem, focusing on the anatomy and character of a goat.
This etching by Nicolaes Berchem captures the head of a goat in profile, turned slightly towards the viewer. Berchem, a prominent figure of the Dutch Golden Age, frequently incorporated livestock into his pastoral scenes. This work functions as a focused study of animal anatomy, demonstrating his technical proficiency with the etching needle.
The composition relies on precise line work to define the texture of the goat's coat. Short, rhythmic strokes create the coarse fur around the neck and ears, while longer, flowing lines delineate the beard and the curve of the horns. The artist employs varying densities of hatching to suggest volume and shadow, particularly around the eye and the underside of the jaw. The background remains clean, allowing the subject to occupy the space without distraction.
Berchem was known for his ability to render animals with a sense of individual character. In this print, the goat is depicted with a calm, alert expression. The inclusion of the inscription 'Berchem Fec' (Berchem made this) and the publisher's mark 'Visscher edid' indicates the commercial nature of such prints during the seventeenth century. These small-scale studies were often produced for collectors or as reference material for other artists. The work reflects the period's interest in naturalistic observation, where the study of domestic animals was a common pursuit for painters and printmakers alike. The clarity of the lines and the balance of the composition make this a representative example of Berchem's graphic output, showing his capacity to elevate a simple subject through disciplined draftsmanship.
