Max Weber was a Russian-born American painter and printmaker who became a leading figure in the introduction of European modernism to the United States. After studying in Paris under Henri Matisse and befriending Henri Rousseau, Weber returned to New York with a style that synthesised Fauvism and Cubism. This woodcut, titled Head, dates from a period when Weber explored the possibilities of relief printing to create stark, expressive forms. The composition features a highly stylised human face rendered in a single colour of earthy brown ink. Weber employs bold, thick lines and geometric shapes to define the features, reflecting his interest in African and Oceanic art. The eye is represented by a simple circular void, while the nose and mouth are suggested through angular, intersecting planes. The texture of the woodblock is visible in the printed areas, giving the work a tactile quality that contrasts with the smooth, cream-toned paper. Weber produced a series of small woodcuts between 1918 and 1920, often carving into small scraps of wood or even basswood blocks. These prints allowed him to experiment with abstraction on a miniature scale. The border of the print is irregular, showing the physical edges of the carved block and the pressure of the hand-printing process. This work is a clear example of Weber's role in the American avant-garde, moving away from representational accuracy toward a more conceptual and structural approach to the human figure. The small scale of the work invites close inspection, revealing the grain of the wood and the slight variations in ink density. These imperfections are characteristic of the hand-printed woodcut and distinguish it from more mechanical reproduction methods. The choice of a warm, earthy brown ink instead of a standard black provides a softer quality to the image, making it suitable for a variety of interior settings.
