A serene American Impressionist study of grazing sheep and haystacks, capturing the quiet atmosphere of a New England field in soft, natural light.
Willard Metcalf, a prominent figure in the Ten American Painters group, produced this work during a period when he focused on the rural character of New England. The composition captures a quiet, pastoral moment, featuring two large haystacks situated in a field where sheep graze. The artist employs a palette dominated by earthy ochres, soft greens, and muted blues, reflecting the atmospheric conditions of a late afternoon.
Metcalf applies paint with a controlled, rhythmic brushwork that suggests the texture of the dried grass and the soft wool of the sheep. The light filters through the trees on the right, casting long, dappled shadows across the foreground. This play of light and shadow creates a sense of depth, drawing the eye from the immediate grazing animals toward the distant, rolling horizon.
Unlike the more radical experiments of his European contemporaries, Metcalf maintained a balance between observational accuracy and the expressive qualities of paint. The work avoids excessive detail, opting instead for a harmonious arrangement of colour and tone. The haystacks serve as the primary vertical elements, grounding the scene against the expansive, open sky. This piece reflects the artist's interest in the seasonal rhythms of agricultural life, a recurring theme in his mature career. The absence of human figures emphasises the solitude of the environment, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay of natural forms and light.
