A detailed etching by David Deuchar depicting a group of labourers resting beside a haystack in a rural setting, executed in the style of Dutch genre scenes.
This etching by the Scottish artist David Deuchar captures a quiet moment of respite during the harvest. Deuchar, a naval surgeon by profession, was a dedicated amateur printmaker who produced a significant body of work, often inspired by the Dutch masters of the seventeenth century. His style frequently reflects the influence of artists such as Adriaen van Ostade, whose depictions of peasant life and rural activities provided a template for Deuchar’s own compositions.
The scene presents a group of labourers taking a break beside a large, conical haystack. The figures are arranged in relaxed, recumbent positions, with one woman attending to another, suggesting a sense of communal fatigue and shared rest. In the background, a village with a church spire sits under a sky filled with distinct, rounded clouds. The composition is balanced by the verticality of the tools propped against the hay and the horizontal sprawl of the resting workers.
Deuchar’s technique relies on fine, controlled lines to build texture and form. The cross-hatching in the shadows of the haystack and the varied line weights used to define the folds of clothing demonstrate his technical proficiency with the etching needle. The work avoids excessive sentimentality, opting instead for a direct observation of rural life. The inclusion of a small jug near the haystack adds a domestic detail to the outdoor setting. This print is characteristic of Deuchar’s output, which often sought to emulate the rustic charm and technical precision of earlier European printmaking traditions. It provides a window into the aesthetic interests of an eighteenth-century artist who looked back to the Golden Age of Dutch art for his inspiration.
