Description
Hawthorn Dene draws attention to a stepped waterfall above a dark pool, where tall trees and mossed stone make the ravine feel cool and sheltered.
Water drops over uneven pale ledges before reaching the still stream below, where large grey boulders break the near bank. Ferny growth softens the blocky rock faces, and a tall stand of conifers presses in from the left. Behind the falls, lighter deciduous trees open towards a patch of cloud, giving depth to the enclosed gorge.
A visit to Hawthorn Dene can turn quickly from a wooded path to the sound and spray of running water. This view keeps that change of scale close, following the stream between shaded stone and trees towards the bright falls at its centre.
