A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting harbour workers loading a small boat, rendered with fine lines and a focus on maritime activity.
This etching captures a scene of maritime labour, depicting a group of workers loading a small boat near a shoreline. In the background, a larger vessel sits at anchor, its masts and rigging rendered with precise, delicate lines. The composition balances the activity of the foreground figures with the expansive, open water, creating a sense of scale typical of seventeenth-century marine prints.
Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi was a prominent publisher and printmaker based in Rome. His workshop was responsible for disseminating a vast array of prints, often collaborating with various artists to produce works that documented contemporary life, architecture, and classical subjects. This particular print reflects the technical proficiency of the period, utilising fine cross-hatching to suggest the texture of the water and the weathered surfaces of the wooden vessels.
The figures are depicted in a naturalistic manner, their postures conveying the physical effort required for port work. The artist employs a restrained approach to shading, allowing the white space of the paper to represent the bright, clear atmosphere of the harbour. Such works were often collected in albums or used as reference material for painters, providing a visual record of the daily operations within Mediterranean ports. The print demonstrates the clarity and attention to detail that defined the output of the De' Rossi press, which remained a central hub for print production in Italy for several decades. The work is a fine example of the period's interest in genre scenes, where the focus shifts from grand historical narratives to the quiet, functional activities of everyday life.
