Description
This abstract composition by Alexandra Exter depicts a harlequin and a woman with a necklace, rendered in geometric forms and a limited palette. The work exemplifies Exter's synthesis of Cubism, Futurism, and Constructivism.
Alexandra Exter, a Russian artist (1882-1949), was a key figure in the development of Constructivism and Art Deco. Her work synthesised various avant-garde styles, including Cubism, Futurism, and Suprematism. Exter explored abstraction, colour theory, and dynamic compositions across painting, theatre design, and costume. She taught with other avant-garde artists such as Kazimir Malevich and Wassily Kandinsky. After emigrating to France in 1924, she continued to work in theatre and design. 'Harlequin and Woman with Necklace' exemplifies Exter's geometric abstraction. The figures are rendered as angular forms in a limited palette of blue, black, white, and grey. The harlequin, a traditional Commedia dell'Arte character, is deconstructed into geometric shapes, retaining only the suggestion of a costume and mask. The woman with a necklace is similarly abstracted, her form defined by sharp lines and flat planes. The composition is dynamic, with intersecting shapes creating a sense of movement and tension. The dotted border adds a decorative element, framing the scene and enhancing its visual impact.
