This ink painting by Kenkō Shōkei depicts the legendary Tang dynasty poet-monks, Hanshan and Shide. The figures are rendered with the characteristic economy of the Muromachi period, where the artist employs fluid, calligraphic brushwork to capture the essence of the subjects rather than their precise physical likeness. Hanshan is shown pointing upwards, his expression one of jovial enlightenment, while Shide looks towards him with a matching grin. The composition relies on the interplay between the dark, saturated ink of their robes and the negative space of the paper, which suggests a void or spiritual atmosphere.
Kenkō Shōkei, a monk-painter associated with the Kenchō-ji temple in Kamakura, was a student of the painter Geiami. His work reflects the influence of Chinese Song and Yuan dynasty ink traditions, which were highly valued in Japanese Zen circles. The figures are depicted with a sense of spontaneity, a hallmark of the Chan and Zen traditions that sought to express the unconventional nature of these two figures. Hanshan and Shide were often portrayed as eccentric, laughing figures who lived outside the rigid structures of society, representing a form of spiritual liberation. The broom resting at their feet is a traditional attribute of Shide, who worked in the kitchen of the Guoqing Temple. The painting is executed on a vertical scroll format, typical of the period, designed for meditative viewing. The brushstrokes are varied, ranging from the thick, dark lines of the garments to the delicate, precise lines defining the facial features and hands. This work provides a window into the aesthetic values of the Muromachi period, where ink painting functioned as both a religious practice and a refined artistic pursuit.
