An etching by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, this portrait of his brother, Hans Walter Kirchner, is rendered in a linear Expressionist style, with hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow.
This etching by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner presents a portrait of his brother, Hans Walter Kirchner. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker, a founder of the artists group Die Brücke (The Bridge), which was a key group leading to the foundation of Expressionism in 20th-century art. Kirchner volunteered for military service in the First World War, but experienced a mental breakdown and was discharged. In 1937, his work was branded as "degenerate" by the Nazis, and over 600 of his works were removed from museums. He committed suicide in 1938. The portrait is rendered in a linear style, with hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow. The subject is depicted from the chest up, wearing a collared shirt and buttoned jacket. The lines are angular and somewhat agitated, typical of Kirchner's Expressionist style. In the background, sketchy figures and abstract lines add to the overall sense of unease and psychological tension. The print is monochromatic, with the stark contrast between the black lines and the white paper enhancing the graphic quality of the work.
