A detailed etching by Domenico Cunego reproducing Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel spandrel, depicting the dramatic punishment of Haman.
This print by Domenico Cunego reproduces a section of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, specifically the spandrel depicting the punishment of Haman. The original fresco was painted by Michelangelo Buonarroti between 1508 and 1512. Cunego, a skilled Italian engraver, captured the dramatic tension and anatomical precision of the original work through his refined use of line and shadow.
The composition is constrained within a triangular spandrel, a shape that dictates the arrangement of the figures. In the centre, the figure of Haman is depicted in a state of physical agony, his body twisted as he faces his execution. To the left and right, secondary scenes provide narrative context, showing figures gathered in interior spaces. These groups observe the unfolding events, their postures and gestures adding to the sense of theatre and moral weight inherent in the biblical subject matter.
Cunego employs a sophisticated technique of hatching and cross-hatching to translate the tonal range of Michelangelo's fresco into a monochromatic medium. The print demonstrates the eighteenth-century interest in documenting the masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance. By translating these large-scale works into portable prints, engravers like Cunego allowed wider audiences to study the composition and draughtsmanship of the masters. The work remains a clear example of the technical capability required to replicate complex frescoes, maintaining the sense of volume and spatial depth despite the limitations of the print format. The inclusion of the Latin inscription at the base provides the specific biblical reference, grounding the visual narrative in its textual source.
