A woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting travellers warming themselves by a fire in the winter station of Hamamatsu.
This woodblock print is part of the Hoeido Tokaido series, a collection documenting the route between Edo and Kyoto. Utagawa Hiroshige captures the station of Hamamatsu during the winter months. The composition focuses on a group of travellers gathered around a fire, seeking warmth against the chill of the season. A large, vertical tree trunk dominates the foreground, providing a visual anchor that separates the figures from the open, frost-covered fields beyond.
The artist employs a muted colour palette to convey the atmosphere of a cold, winter day. The smoke from the fire rises in a pale, vertical plume, contrasting with the deep blue of the sky at the top of the frame. In the distance, the silhouettes of trees and buildings suggest the quiet, sparse nature of the rural environment. Hiroshige uses fine lines to delineate the textures of the travellers' clothing and the dry, winter grass.
This series is recognised for its departure from the focus on famous landmarks, instead prioritising the daily experiences of those travelling the road. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Hiroshige to produce these images. The use of bokashi, or colour gradation, is visible in the sky, a technique that adds depth to the two-dimensional surface. By depicting the mundane reality of a cold rest stop, the artist provides a glimpse into the social history of the Edo period. The print remains a representative example of the ukiyo-e tradition, where the observation of nature and human activity are combined within a structured, graphic format.
