A delicate ink painting by Ōtagaki Rengetsu depicting the legendary fox-spirit Hakuzosu in the guise of a monk, rendered in the traditional sumi-e style.
This ink painting by the Japanese nun and poet Ōtagaki Rengetsu depicts the legendary figure Hakuzosu. In Japanese folklore, Hakuzosu is a fox-spirit who assumes the guise of a Buddhist monk to protect his kin. Rengetsu captures the subject with characteristic economy, using minimal brushwork to convey the fox-spirit's hooded form and contemplative posture. The figure stands amidst tall, sparse grasses, rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines that suggest movement in a gentle breeze.
Rengetsu was a prominent figure in the Bunjinga tradition, which valued the personal expression of the artist over technical perfection. Her work often combines painting with her own calligraphy, reflecting her life as a Buddhist practitioner. The composition relies on the interplay between empty space and ink wash, a technique known as yohaku-no-bi. The fox-spirit is portrayed with a sense of quiet dignity, his features subtly suggested rather than explicitly defined. The muted palette of grey tones and black ink creates a sense of stillness, consistent with the meditative quality of her broader body of work.
As a woman artist in the nineteenth century, Rengetsu maintained a unique position, producing ceramics and paintings that were highly regarded for their simplicity and spiritual depth. This piece demonstrates her ability to distil complex folklore into a singular, evocative image. The brushstrokes are deliberate, showing the confidence of an artist who spent decades refining her craft. The absence of heavy detail allows the viewer to focus on the silhouette and the atmospheric quality of the scene. This print reproduces the original ink wash textures, preserving the delicate tonal variations of the paper and the fluidity of the artist's hand.
