Description

A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting travellers navigating the steep mountain pass of Hakone, featuring traditional Japanese calligraphy.

This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the mountain pass of Hakone, a difficult segment of the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. As part of the Kyoka iri Tokaido series, this edition incorporates kyoka, a form of humorous or satirical poetry, into the composition. The visual narrative focuses on a group of travellers navigating the steep, rocky path, assisted by porters carrying palanquins. The red banners or torches held by the figures provide a sharp colour contrast against the muted, grey-toned mountains that dominate the background.

Hiroshige uses a flattened perspective to organise the scene, placing the travellers on a diagonal path that guides the eye through the mountainous terrain. The pine trees, rendered with characteristic economy, frame the steep incline and provide a sense of scale. The print captures the atmospheric conditions of the region, with the mist-filled valleys and sharp peaks suggesting the rugged nature of the Hakone pass. The inclusion of text within the image area is a hallmark of this specific series, blending graphic design with pictorial representation.

Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the ukiyo-e process. The registration of the blocks allows for the clean separation of the figures from the background, while the subtle gradations in the mountain shading show the skill of the carvers and printers involved in the production. This work offers a glimpse into the travel culture of the Edo period, documenting the physical exertion required to traverse the Japanese interior. It remains a clear example of Hiroshige's ability to balance human activity with the imposing presence of the natural world.
