Francesco Cozza, a Calabrian painter active in Rome during the seventeenth century, depicts the biblical narrative of Hagar and Ishmael in this composition. The scene captures the moment an angel appears to Hagar in the wilderness, offering divine intervention as she despairs for her son. Cozza employs the dramatic lighting characteristic of the Baroque period, using deep shadows against the rocky terrain to focus attention on the figures.

The angel occupies the centre of the frame, suspended in mid-air with wings outstretched. Hagar, dressed in flowing robes, gestures toward the celestial visitor, her posture conveying a mix of surprise and relief. To the right, the young Ishmael rests upon the ground, his form integrated into the rugged, earthy foreground. The background opens into a wooded area, providing a sense of depth that contrasts with the enclosed, shadowed space where the primary action occurs.

Cozza was influenced by the classicising tendencies of his contemporaries, such as Domenichino and Poussin. This is evident in the balanced arrangement of the figures and the careful attention to the anatomical proportions. The palette relies on muted earth tones, punctuated by the soft white of the angel's drapery and the muted pink of Hagar's garment. The trees, rendered with thin, skeletal branches, frame the scene and guide the viewer's eye through the composition.
