Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, was a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism. This work, painted in 1914, demonstrates his rigorous approach to the movement. Unlike the fragmented, monochromatic works of early Analytical Cubism, Gris employed a more structured, architectural method. He often began with a mathematical grid, upon which he arranged his subjects to create a coherent, albeit flattened, pictorial space.

The composition features a guitar, a bottle, and a glass, all rendered through the lens of geometric abstraction. Gris incorporates a distinct checkerboard pattern in the background, which serves to anchor the objects while simultaneously challenging the viewer's perception of depth. The wood grain texture applied to the guitar body provides a tactile quality, contrasting with the sharp, angular planes of the surrounding forms. The inclusion of musical notation and the partial label on the bottle are characteristic of his use of collage-like elements, even when executed entirely in paint.

Gris maintained a focus on clarity and order throughout his career. His work often appears more calculated than that of his contemporaries, Pablo Picasso or Georges Braque. By isolating these everyday objects, he invites the viewer to examine the relationship between form, colour, and the two-dimensional surface of the canvas. The oval format of the composition further emphasises the self-contained nature of the arrangement, directing the eye toward the centre where the bottle and guitar overlap. This piece remains a clear example of the artist's ability to balance complex geometric organisation with the recognisable iconography of the still life tradition.
