Thomas Fearnley, a prominent figure in nineteenth-century Norwegian art, produced this study of Gudvangen in 1839. The work captures the dramatic topography of the Nærøyfjord region, a site that drew many artists during the Romantic period. Fearnley focuses on the sheer verticality of the mountain walls, which are punctuated by multiple cascading waterfalls. The artist employs a direct, painterly approach, using visible brushwork to convey the rugged texture of the rock faces and the ephemeral quality of the falling water.

The composition is dominated by the steep, dark slopes that frame the central gorge. Fearnley uses a palette of deep browns, ochres, and muted greens to describe the terrain, contrasting these earthy tones with the pale, translucent whites of the water.
