A character study by Scottish etcher David Deuchar, this etching captures a profile portrait with a focus on expressive line work and texture.
David Deuchar, a Scottish etcher and seal engraver, produced a significant body of work inspired by the Dutch masters, particularly Rembrandt. This etching, titled Grotesque Head in High Fur Cap, demonstrates his interest in character studies and the tradition of the 'tronie', a genre focused on exaggerated facial features and expressive headgear rather than formal portraiture.
The figure is depicted in profile, facing left. The artist employs a series of dense, cross-hatched lines to define the texture of the high, rounded fur cap, which dominates the upper portion of the composition. The facial features are rendered with economy, using short, sharp strokes to suggest the sagging skin and pronounced nose of an elderly subject. The collar of the garment is indicated with diagonal hatching, providing a dark base that anchors the head against the otherwise sparse background.
Deuchar was known for his collection of etchings after the Dutch and Flemish schools, which he published in 1803. His own original works, such as this, often mirror the stylistic choices of the seventeenth-century etchers he admired. The plate shows the characteristic plate mark of an intaglio print, with the ink sitting slightly raised on the paper surface. The focus here is on the caricature-like quality of the subject, a common theme in the eighteenth-century pursuit of physiognomy and the study of human types. This print offers a glimpse into the private artistic experiments of a practitioner who bridged the gap between amateur enthusiasm and professional printmaking in late eighteenth-century Scotland.
