A woodcut print by Dutch artist Wendelien Schönfeld, depicting an industrial harbour scene through layered colour and geometric reflection.
Wendelien Schönfeld is a Dutch artist known for her mastery of the woodcut medium. This work, titled Groot Uitzicht (linksboven), captures an industrial harbour scene with a focus on the interplay between solid structures and fluid reflections. The composition is divided between the architectural elements of the dockside, featuring cranes and buildings, and the water surface below.
Schönfeld employs a distinct layering technique, typical of her approach to printmaking. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft peach, muted green, and slate tones to define the forms. The water acts as a mirror, breaking the rigid geometry of the cranes and buildings into fragmented, rhythmic patterns. By using the woodcut process, the artist introduces a tactile quality to the image, where the grain of the wood and the pressure of the press inform the final appearance of the print. The lines are deliberate, creating a balance between the static nature of the port and the movement of the water.
This piece reflects a keen observation of modern urban environments. Rather than focusing on the scale of the industrial machinery, the artist draws attention to the light and colour present in the scene. The inclusion of smaller study-like elements at the bottom of the sheet provides insight into the artist's process, showing how she experiments with different viewpoints or colour variations before arriving at the final composition. The work is a study of atmosphere, demonstrating how industrial subjects can be rendered with a sense of quietude and precision.
