A Baroque design for a decorative sugar sculpture featuring allegorical figures of Faith, Prudence, and Fidelity, rendered in pen and grey wash.
This drawing by Giovanni Battista Lenardi depicts an allegorical arrangement, likely intended as a design for a sugar sculpture or a decorative centrepiece for a banquet. The composition features three figures representing the virtues of Faith, Prudence, and Fidelity. The central figure holds a mirror, a traditional attribute of Prudence, while the surrounding figures are integrated into a base of scrolling, acanthus-like foliage. The use of grey wash provides volume to the drapery and the large, plume-like structure that rises behind the figures, creating a sense of theatricality typical of the late seventeenth-century Roman Baroque style.
Lenardi, active in Rome, was known for his work in various media, including painting and design for ephemeral decorations. Such drawings were often produced for the elaborate festivities hosted by the Roman aristocracy or the papal court. The technique combines precise pen work with fluid washes, allowing the artist to define the sculptural forms while maintaining the lightness required for a design intended to be executed in sugar or confectionery. The base of the composition is particularly notable for its ornamental quality, where the figures appear to emerge from a decorative, wave-like structure. This work offers a glimpse into the intersection of fine art and the culinary arts during the Baroque period, where even temporary displays were subject to rigorous artistic standards and complex iconographic programmes. The paper shows signs of age, with the ink and wash retaining their tonal range, providing a clear view of the artist's preparatory process and his ability to balance complex allegorical themes with decorative requirements.
