Alfred Wallis, a Cornish fisherman turned painter, produced this work during his later years in St Ives. Wallis began painting in his seventies, often using discarded cardboard and household paints salvaged from his trade. His approach to composition ignores traditional perspective, favouring a flattened, map-like arrangement of elements that prioritises personal memory over optical realism.

In this piece, the scene is organised with a direct, unrefined clarity. A road cuts diagonally across the composition, separating the pictorial space into distinct zones. Houses, a tree, and patches of vegetation are placed with a sense of intuitive balance rather than geometric precision. The forms are simplified into basic shapes, reflecting the artist's lack of formal training and his reliance on the materials at hand. The paint application is direct, with limited blending, which gives the surface a tactile, immediate quality.

Wallis was discovered by Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood in 1928, who admired his work for its raw honesty and lack of academic influence. His output is characterised by a rejection of the conventions taught in art schools. Instead, he painted what he knew, often focusing on the maritime life of Cornwall or the local countryside. This specific work demonstrates his ability to translate a familiar environment into a series of graphic signs. The colour palette is restricted, consistent with the limited range of paints he could acquire. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Wallis captures the essence of the scene through a personal, idiosyncratic visual language. His work remains a significant example of British folk art, valued for its authenticity and the way it bypasses the complexities of the contemporary art world of his time.
