Joseph-Marie Vien, a figure of significant influence in the transition from the Rococo to the Neoclassical style, completed this work in 1767. The painting depicts a scene of classical antiquity, a subject matter that gained traction during the mid-eighteenth century as archaeological discoveries in Pompeii and Herculaneum captured the European imagination.

The composition features a standing woman, partially draped in white linen, leaning against a stone balustrade. A second figure, kneeling at her feet, attends to her with a cloth. The setting includes architectural elements such as fluted columns and a large urn, which provide a structured, orderly environment. Vien employs a controlled palette and smooth brushwork, moving away from the decorative excesses of the preceding generation. The lighting is even and clear, focusing attention on the figures and their interaction within the space.
